I have been asked to provide some insight into these images, Lone Deflated Balloon has been used to illustrate my thought processes and actions. Venice has been painted and photographed probably hundreds of millions of times. Everything has been tried before but nevertheless I strived to capture a vision of this timeless city from the deepest recesses of my own being. Reflecting the way that I think and how these thoughts are interpreted into images in my mind of which the camera becomes an integral part. Flicking through speed and f stops in a haze, working the shutter almost in a coma when we become one I loose touch with everything around me; having no idea what I am doing or where I am going, my surroundings are lost, only the image exists. The Lone Deflated Balloon was sitting on top of the water just off Grand Canal, it conjured visions of what has been and past, but was refusing to cease to exist. The water around the balloon reflected baroque facades and brilliant colours but was full of movement with sea swell, bow waves and tidal flow. The wave movements caught the light and contorted reflections to provide comedy and a juxtaposition of friendly cartoon characters and the demons that we all fear. The abstracted images in the Venice Seascape series have not been digitally altered other than some use of contrast and colour saturation. The images print beautifully on Ilfochrome and Ilfoflex and also work well on Canvas.
