Born in Toronto, Canada, Tana has lived in Worthing for 30 years and is a graduate in Intellectual History from Sussex University.
Having sold a number of watercolours in the late 1990s she has moved to using acrylic on canvas and has developed this exciting new series which is currently being exhibited at various locations on the south coast.
Tana creates her paintings using real subjects or photographic images, depending on availability. Once chosen the composition is enlarged onto the canvas. Tana begins to apply the putty and to sculpt the levels that are to protrude from the canvas. Finally the putty is sanded and the paint is applied to enhance the tones and depth of the image.
The paintings are crafted in the tradition of pargeting or the ancient tradition of relief sculpture, known as bas-relief where the design projects only slightly from the base. The flowers provide the sensual shapes, contours and lines that throw their own shadows on the work depending on the source of light. Some of the pieces are finished using deep colours which are rich and vibrant and lend themselves well to the final sculpted work, while the tactile surface of the coloured and plain pieces is both pleasing and interesting to the sense of touch.
