In July 2001, Worthing performers and artists created their own Fringe festival
to provide a grassroots and community-based alternative to the
Worthing International Arts Festival with a diverse programme of music,
visual and performing arts. SWAG was formed as a result of
the positive public response, which strongly indicated a demand for
community "grass roots" arts events. Cllr Tim Dice, Executive Member for Culture
and Leisure Sevices at the time, was a strong lobbying voice and supporter
of SWAG's aims and initiatives.
